I just spent the past hour looking at costs of buying and running an bi-fuel LPG car as an undergraduate student if I ever go the UK for uni. Turns out only one of the five unis I applied to allow students to park on campus, unless they have very special needs.

Oh well. I was slightly hopeful about a Proton Gen-2.

I'm in the UK, and my uni only sells parking permits to students living off-campus... But I did my research, and discovered that one of the student accommodation facilities has basically no parking enforcement, and an absolute shit load of free parking spaces. I've been here for a month and a half now, my car parked outside the entire time, and I haven't gotten a single fine.

Try Googling around to see if any of your unis has something similar. I'm not sure how viable LPG will be, though; I don't know if the savings on fuel will be enough to balance out the cost of the conversion/buying a pre-converted car over a regular one.

If you buy a used one with it installed already it can become lucrative quickly. It does depend on the cost of both gasoline and LPG in the UK, which is something I'm not familiar with, and the premium you pay for an LPG converted car.

I do know that in my car I cut my fuel bills in half. Fuel consumption on LPG goes up a bit (10-15%) due to the lower energy content, but the lower price more than makes up for that. At a cheap gas station in the Netherlands gasoline (regular 95 octane) is about €1.58 a liter, while LPG is about €0.63 a liter. That's quite the difference.

Only York has extensive parking available and only for students living off-campus, which I'm not sure I will be. I haven't even heard back from them yet so that was just wishful thinking. I poked around and it looks like LPG is about 50p cheaper than standard jungle juice. Coupled with a second-hand, dedicated bi-fuel car produced by the factory, a Proton Gen-2 ecoLogic for £995, it seemed like a pretty good deal...
